Yakou, named Nanxun, a well-known ancient town during the Ming and Qing Dynasties, is hometown of Shi Lang, who rendered outstanding service in recovering Taiwan and the map of China. As Shi Lang built his home in his hometown, the villagers began to have their country fair trade in front of yamen, the government office. With the days went by, the place was called Yakou, meaning the doorway of yamen. Home of Jinghai Hou and the Ancestral Hall of Shi Family have been opened as Shi Lang Memorial Hall. The precious cultural relics exhibited in the hall have fully appreciated Shi Lang’s patriotism and his historical deeds and contribution to the politics, military affairs, culture, economy, communications and other social undertakings between the straits. In May, 2006, Shi Lang Memorial Hall became one of the key cultural relics under state-level protection publicized by the State Council. The hall is also a base for patriotism education and national defense education. To the east of Yakou lies a 5-kilometer-long beach, a beautiful and safe natural bathing place. On the beach stands a 16.83-meter high (symbolizing Shi Lang recovered Taiwan in 1683) stone statue of General Shi Lang, which faces Taiwan and looks martial and solemn with a sword holding in his hand. There are some large complexes of ancient buildings in the village of Yakou. These typical traditional buildings of Southern Fujian were built by the members of Shi family who went to Taiwan with Shi Lang to engage in trading business between Taiwan and Southern Fujian and built some large complexes of buildings named after their firms. The old temple, “Dingguang Nunnery”, which has a close relation to Shi Lang’s childhood is said to be built in the reign of Zhide of the Tang Dynasty and has a history of over 1200 years. The local snacks of Yakou have long been famous such as the 100-year-long brand of Yakou Peanuts, salty cakes, cracking Yakou taro balls and all deserve the tourists to taste. Yakou, the famous hometown of Overseas Chinese is worthy of the fame of being one of the “Top Ten Charming Villages of Quanzhou” with its cultural fundamentals and beautiful natural scenes. |
